The Mercedes-Benz M272 is a naturally aspirated V6 gasoline engine produced between 2004 and 2015. It replaced the M112 engine and was designed with a focus on smoother performance, better efficiency, and reduced emissions. The M272 features an aluminum engine block and heads, a DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) layout with four valves per cylinder, and continuous variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts. It also incorporates a balance shaft in the V of the engine to reduce vibrations, addressing a common issue in V6 configurations. The engine was available in various displacements ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 liters, with the M272 E35 (3.5L) being the most common and widely used in models like the E-Class (W211), C-Class (W204), and ML-Class (W164).

Functionally, the M272 provides a balance of performance and refinement. Its variable valve timing system optimizes engine breathing across a wide RPM range, enhancing both low-end torque and high-end power. This makes it suitable for luxury sedans and SUVs requiring responsive yet smooth power delivery. However, the M272 gained notoriety for a specific reliability issue: premature wear of the balance shaft gear in early production engines (mainly before 2008), which could lead to engine failure and expensive repairs. Despite this flaw, when properly maintained and updated, the M272 is capable of delivering reliable performance and is still found in many vehicles on the road today.
